UCL People
University College London is the countries foremost multi-faculty university. It has an alumni database containing in excess of 70,000 individuals, many of whom are resident outside the UK.

The brief
Following establishment of a new communications team, we were tasked with evaluating the range of existing communication collateral and making recommendations as to how their budget could be most effectively utilised.

Our solution
Following detailed analysis of their existing publications and research to gain a full understanding of their various audiences we recommended the creation of three distinct communication channels:

creation of two seperate publications: the first entitled 'Universe' designed for distribution to a limited audience for whom its in-depth coverage of research breakthroughs would be of interest.

The second was entitled 'UCL People' - a complete revamp of the existing alumni magazine in terms of content, editorial, use of photography and format.

The third channel was increased use of the university intranet and the creation and establishment of a new website with a significantly enhanced and expanded Alumni Relations area.

This task in itself took over six months to implement as we redifined and developed a multi-level information hierarchy and established a range of templates to ensure consistent, ongoing development of the site.

'UCL People' went on to win numerous Heist Awards over the next three years including three Gold awards.

In 2002, we were briefed to revamp and update the publication which became a full colour magazine, with a Sunday-supplement style editorial content and graphic treatment. Regular features appeared in each issue, so that the reader could become familiar with the layout of the publication. Longer, in-depth articles were interspersed with news articles and each issue featured a ‘cover story’ that was given in-depth treatment inside.

The results
Recognising the importance and value of the alumni publication was key. In the words of Nicholas Tyndale, UCL’s Head of Communications: 'Bryt has added considerable value to UCL's communications programme through their in-depth analysis of our collateral and creation of a communications strategy'.

Testimonial
"Bryt's breadth of client experience has helped to bring fresh perspectives on, and approaches to, the university's interaction with its key stakeholders."

Nicholas Tyndale, Head of Communications, University College London
